Head to Head matches
They start in May and are your first opportunity at grabbing a playoff spot
WHAT IS THE FORMAT?
This is the first path one can take to securing a playoff spot. For this competition only, the TPGL will be organized into three divisions based on handicaps. TPGL players compete in 8 head to head matches against players in their own flight. The competition is net stroke play with 1 point awarded to the low score on the front nine, 1 point to the back nine, and 1 point for the 18 holes. The top 5 players (most points won) from each of the 3 flights are awarded a playoff spot.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE ARE PLAYERS TIED IN THE STANDINGS AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE HEAD TO HEAD COMPETITION ?
If there are ties in the standings (i.e. same number of points earned among players in a flight), the head to head “net average” score will be used as the first tie breaker. The second tie breaker will be the season-long “net average” score.
HOW WILL I KNOW WHERE I AM IN THE STANDINGS?
On the website, under RESULTS, there is a page called: 2018 TPGL Head to Head Standings. For each flight, the standings will be updated and posted on the website every Monday, along with other news and announcements that can be found on TPGL Central.
ARE THERE MERCHANDISE AWARDS FOR THIS COMPETITION?
Yes. The total purse is $3,600, based on a field of 45 players. Gift certificates redeemable at the Arboretum Golf Shop will be awarded to the winners of each match. A $20 gift certificate is available for each match won. To win the $20, a player must earn at least 2 of the 3 points. If both players earn 1 ½ points, the merchandise award is split 50-50. There is no merchandise award for winning only 1 point.
IF MY HANDICAP GOES DOWN OR UP, CAN I CHANGE FLIGHTS DURING THE SEASON?
No, once you start the season in a flight, you remain in that flight throughout the season – despite any changes to your handicap index.
HOW EXACTLY ARE THE MATCHES SCHEDULED?
A 100% OBJECTIVE approach is used. The schedule (who plays who for a given day) is based on player availability for that day, the available players’ handicap seeding within their flight, who they have already played, and how many matches have they played that month. First, available players for the day for each flight are listed and ranked from low to high based on current TPGL handicaps. Then, the lowest handicap player in the flight is scheduled against the highest handicap player in the flight. The 2nd lowest handicap player in the flight is scheduled against the 2nd highest handicap player in the flight. The process is repeated until all players in the flight are scheduled.
FROM A SCHEDULING PERSPECTIVE, WHAT HAPPENS IF A PLAYER HAS ALREADY PLAYED SOMEONE?
If a player has already played a head to head match against a player, then the player then moves down the ladder of available opponents and is scheduled against the next highest handicap player. The process will repeat itself until a match is found for the player.
IS THERE A CAP ON HOW MANY MATCHES I PLAY DURING A GIVEN MONTH?
You can expect to play roughly 2 matches per month. This is contingent on your availability and any rain-out dates, which might mean that there could be a month where you play 1 match and another where you play 3. But, out of the gate, expect at least 2 per month. This will allow us to spread out the competition to a season-long event and increase the pool of players available for a given match.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A MATCH CANNOT BE FOUND?
If a match cannot be found for a player that day, no head to head match is scheduled for that player.
IS THERE A FORFEIT POLICY?
Players are instructed to refer to the new TPGL No Card and No Show policy. The policy clearly states that at the 48 hour mark (2 days before the round starts), the round registration process officially shuts down. All players who have signed up for the round and have been confirmed are now 100% committed to play. There is no going back. Foursome pairings, tee times and head to head matches are put together and posted on the TPGL website for members to view. If a player pulls out of a round within the 48 hour mark – with or without justifiable reason – the player forfeits the match and the gift merchandise award for the match. In addition, if a player does not have a justifiable reason for pulling out or not turning in a card, there are other consequences and are explained in the policy.
